And those memories actually began to be made way before the wedding day itself.
From finding our dream wedding venue to popping that all-important ‘will you be my bridesmaid?’ question, I enjoyed each and every moment in the run-up to our wedding. But of course, one of the most memorable moments of all would have to be the day that I chose my wedding dress.
Like any other bride to be, the excitement and anticipation to try on wedding dresses kicked in pretty much straight after we got engaged. I just couldn’t wait to get inside that fitting room and see myself looking like a bride for the very first time.
Before shopping for my wedding dress, I’d been told that I ‘needed’ to try on ‘as many dresses as possible’ in order to find the right one. But now, as someone who has experienced everything for herself, I can assure you that this is 100% not true. My mum and I went in just one shop and I found my dream wedding dress within 2 hours.
In total, I think I tried about 7 or 8 dresses on, and in fairness, they were all absolutely beautiful - plus the girls at Blush Boutique were just phenomenal throughout the experience, which always helps! But as soon as I tried on my dress - my actual wedding dress - I really did ‘just know.’ I didn’t cry or anything like that, but I did feel an overwhelming sense of emotion and almost instantly I could envisage myself walking down the aisle in that dress. For those that are interested, my dress was by Mori Lee in style 8119, and I bought it from Blush Boutique in Uppermill.
And that’s how every bride should feel! So, for this blog post, I thought I’d share with you some top tips for finding your very own perfect wedding dress. I hope you enjoy!
1. Keep An Open Mind
If there’s just one piece of advice I would give to any bride to be, it would be to remain open minded when shopping for their wedding dress. I went wedding dress shopping with absolutely no idea as to what I was going to end up choosing - and I really do believe this worked in my favour.
If you have a very clear idea in your mind as to what you want, then it can be difficult to explore anything that doesn’t fit into that mould. The truth is, though, whilst you may have your heart set on a fitted strapless wedding dress, a long sleeved lace wedding dress may actually suit you better, and prove a lovely surprise! You just never know what you could end up falling in love with, so don’t restrict yourself!
2. Don’t Be Afraid To Be Different
Much like the all of the clothes we wear, wedding dress styles come in and go out of fashion very quickly. One season, simple, strapless wedding dresses may be all the rage, and then the next, it could be heavy embellishments and layers of lace. The trick is to not be influenced by these trends.
Memorable wedding dresses tend to be the ones that people aren’t expecting, so try your best not to follow the crowd too much. There’s a lot to be said for going against the grain!
3. Don’t Take Too Many People With You
Another top tip when shopping for your wedding dress would be to not take too many people along with you - anything more than 4 people just isn’t a wise idea.
I completely understand why brides want to invite a good bunch of people with them when trying on wedding dresses, but this rarely works out as planned. The harsh reality is that you’ll be faced with a lot of opinions (some of which you won’t like and may leave you a little annoyed) and you’ll likely end up very confused.
When I was shopping for my wedding dress, I took my mum and my niece, and that was enough. It also meant that for everybody else on the wedding day, my dress was a complete surprise! Winner!
4. Trust Your Gut - But Don’t Rush Your Decision!
When you try on your dress, you really will just know, but in any case, be careful not to rush your decision. Some styles may end up surprising you, or you may spot something else that you love later down the line - but as soon as you’ve handed over that deposit, that’s it (unless you’re prepared to fork out another wedge of cash, of course!)
5. Don't Try On Too Many Dresses
Some brides will tell you that you need to try on LOADS of dresses in order to find the right one, but this simply isn’t true. In fact, if you try on tons and tons of dresses, then you’ll probably end up confusing yourself and losing track of what you’ve tried on, what you liked, what you didn’t like and so on.
Instead, my advice would be to consider three or four styles of wedding dress and then narrow it down. Once you’ve decided on the wedding dress style that looks and feels the best, you can try more of those dresses on until you find the right one.
Ultimately, it’s important to remember that shopping for your wedding dress is exciting and the experience itself should feel enjoyable. Don’t allow this part of your wedding experience to become a chore or something that you stress about, because there’s no need! No matter what, you will find your perfect dress, so be sure to relish each and every moment!
I really hope that you enjoyed this blog post and I can’t wait to share more wedding stuff with you very soon!
Lots of love,
Grace x
