It's absolutely no secret that I love makeup. I wear makeup everyday, I write about makeup, I take photographs of makeup - makeup is a huge part of my life and it's something that, like many other women, I actually really enjoy. After all, makeup makes me feel good, so why wouldn't I enjoy it?
What I think most women really enjoy about makeup is the fact that it gives them that inner confidence that they need to feel great about themselves. Some days, we wake up, look in the mirror and wonder what happened whilst we were asleep - did we even sleep? Where on earth did those dark circles come from? But, no matter what the issue, it's nothing a bit of great concealer and gorgeous foundation can't fix in just a few brush strokes.
Makeup - we most certainly salute you. In fact, scratch that last - we worship you.
In my opinion, all great makeup looks stem from a flawless base, and this comes from the fact that the first thing we often notice about someone is their skin. I don't know about you, but I'm always drawn to those with great skin - I want to know their secrets, what they use, how much water they drink and so on. Gorgeous, clear skin is mesmerizing, but unless you have the perfect shade of foundation to compliment it, you're truly selling yourself short.
As most of you will know, I recently switched up my foundation, jumping ships from my trusty MAC Face and Body, to my new staple, the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder. And, admittedly, when I went in Selfridges, Manchester Exchange to make the purchase, I was extremely hasty in selecting a shade to match my skintone.
Okay, so I say 'hasty' - perhaps that isn't the right word, really, as a hasty decision usually suggests a 'bad' move so to speak. However, it wasn't a bad move at all. Basically, as a regular user of fake tan, choosing the 'right' shade of foundation can be tricky, as sometimes my skin is more tanned, and other times, it's slightly lighter. This ultimately means that matching a shade can be tricky.
To cut a long story short, the lady in Charlotte Tilbury matched me at a 5 or a 6 with my fresh tan on. However, I decided that a 4 might be a little bit more durable when I'm not tanned, so I asked for the 4.
However, as the story always goes, shade 4 wasn't in stock, so I decided to go for a shade below and opted for 3 instead.
If you're wondering why I went for a 3 when I was matched at a 5/6 with my tan, basically, my reasoning is simple and hopefully it makes sense - ultimately I think that it's better to get a lighter shade that can be brightened and darkened with bronzer than a deeper shade that creates a really obvious line along the jaw.
Hopefully I don't sound too crazy now.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, shade 3 has been great, but with a fresh tan, I have felt like it's washed me out at times. So, this weekend I decided to buy a shade 6 to mix with it.
At Charlotte Tilbury, the shades work quite nicely in that they're made to compliment other shades so that you can customise your own perfect foundation colour. For example, 3 & 6 go together perfectly because they have creamy, caramel undertones. On the other hand, shade 5 is a lot more pinky, meaning that it doesn't work quite as well as 3 when mixed.
Since mixing shade 3 and 6, I've literally been loving my base so much - it's just the most perfect colour! Plus, what's really great is that having two different shades allows me to use more of 3 one day and more of 6 on another day - it's brilliant.
So, if you've ever bought the wrong shade of foundation but you don't want to see it go to waste, why not invest in another shade that you can mix it with to make the perfect colour? Previously to this experience, I've never mixed foundations but honestly, it works so well!
I hope that you enjoyed this post, beauts. Stay tuned for more from Exclusively Grace coming up this week!
Lots of love,
Grace x
This foundation sounds amazing and I love the concept behind it! Will have to give it a try. X
