I think especially when we are younger, we don't always think about cleaning our brushes as often as we should. I can remember being about 19 at uni and I don't think I bothered to do it more than twice a year which is absolutely horrifying! Clearly those were some very dark years with some very, very bad makeup...
Nowadays, though, I'm a preacher when it comes to all things cleanliness and hygiene and I'm forever reminding friends to make sure that their brushes are clean.
The thing is, unclean brushes not only harbour germs and bacteria (yuck!), they also just don't work as effectively as clean brushes. So, as your swiping all of those germs onto your freshly cleansed face, you're also building up to a finished product that won't look nearly as good as it would have done if your brushes were clean.
Yep, it's all about regular cleansing. Try to think of it like you do washing your face - if you don't do it, you'll break out and you won't look fresh. It's the same for your brushes - unless you make the effort to keep them lovely and clean, they'll look grimey and you won't look your usual fabulous self either.

These are my everyday makeup brushes. I clean them roughly times per week with hand wash and let them dry out naturally |
Personally, I use hand soap - it's the cheap alternative to brush cleanser and it works great. I particularly like the creamy Dove hand soaps and the lovely smelling Bayliss and Harding ones, but any is fine really, as long as you take time to massage the bristles carefully in clean water. It's really important that you don't just put all of the brushes into a sink full of water - this way the brushes are just bathing in the grime, which we don't want.
After each brush is cleansed, gently squeeze the brush-head and leave them to dry naturally. Generally, I leave mine on my window ledge lay down overnight. After eight or nine hours the brushes are all fresh and dry and ready to use once again.
I'm a religious brush cleanser so I'd probably say I wash my brushes on average about 5 times a week. However, I understand that this is a bit obsessive, and three times is probably plenty.
I hope that you enjoyed this post. Stay tuned for more exciting stuff coming your way very soon!
Lots of love,
