My skincare regime is something I’m really passionate about and if someone were to ask me which I counter more important out of skincare and makeup, I’d answer with skincare every single time. If you'd like to know more about anti-ageing and skincare, head over to my recent post 'How To Make Your Skin Look Younger.'
The thing is, skincare is the base of everything when it comes to our beauty regimes. It keeps our skin looking radiant and it’s always nice to know that on those days when we really don’t want to put any makeup on, we feel confident enough to go bare-faced. Recently I have been feeling really confident in my skin and so I've been keeping my makeup lighter. If you'd like to read more about what I've been using instead, make sure you check out my post 'Why I've Stopped Using Foundation.'
However, it has to be said that I am very specific about the skincare products I use and one thing that I tend not to bother with are homemade skincare hacks.
The likes of Pinterest (you can follow my Pinterest here) and Instagram (you can follow me on Instagram here) have instigated a surge in bloggers and skincare enthusiasts taking matters into their own hands and creating their own remedies for their skin. With skin complaints ranging from mild and moderate acne to the first signs of ageing, these hacks know no bounds and the ingredients used to fix such issues are, well, a bit odd if you ask me.
And just to clarify, that isn’t me saying that these ingredients don’t work. For all I know, those homemade masks and treatments are the best thing since sliced bread. However, as I am so careful with my skin, I prefer to put my trust in the professionals and spend a little more money on my products. In my opinion, as with anything else, really, these remedies may work for some, but for others, the results could be less than pretty.
There are of course, some exceptions to this. I think that really natural ingredients such as natural Greek yoghurt and Manuka honey are both amazing products to use on the skin (Holland and Barrett sell an amazing brand called Manuka Doctor that I highly recommend if you like this ingredient). Not only are these tasty treats super satisfying when we eat them, they’ve also been proven to soothe our skin and compliment our complexions. Keen Pinterest users swear by honey and oat masks and I have to say, mild treatments like this are fairly harmless.
But, if you’re a little more experimental or you’re simply getting to the point where you’ll try anything, I’d strongly recommend doing a little research first. Have you honestly already tried everything? And have you spoken to your doctor about your skin concerns? I’ve had friends suffering with skin complaints like acne and they’ve found speaking with their GP incredibly beneficial. So, if you haven’t explored this route yet, maybe this is your next step? Ultimately, this blog post was written just to make you aware of the risks involved in creating your own skincare remedies. Some ingredients are incredibly harsh and really shouldn’t be played around with, let alone applied to the face. So, before you resort to emptying your kitchen cupboard and mixing together a medley of random products, think twice - and make sure you know for certain that these ingredients are completely safe to use!
