Often associated with skin sensitivity, redness is a common issue that affects tons of people - and yet for some reason, the topic of how to tackle redness and how to prevent redness, is one that continues to confuse us.
So, what are the best products for redness? And how can we reduce redness on the face? Well, I’m going to cover all of this and more right here in this blog post. So, grab yourself an iced latte, make yourself comfortable and get ready for my top tips on how to relieve redness...
Everything You Need To Know About Skin Redness
1. What causes redness?
Skin redness can be caused by a variety of different issues ranging from acne and rose rosacea to seborrhea and sun damage (plus many more!) and so it can often be difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why you may be suffering from red skin. The good news is, there are things you can do and products you can use to help relieve the issue and clear up your complexion.
2. What can I do to reduce redness on my face?
There are many things you can do to help relieve your facial redness, and you don’t necessarily have to spend a small fortune to get that fresh and fabulous complexion you’ve been dreaming of.
Firstly, it’s important that you address your skincare regime. It’s possible that what you are currently using on your face isn’t helping your redness - in fact, you may actually be amplifying the issue. Simple techniques such as swapping your usual face wash to a very gentle cleanser and taking a break from that harsh exfoliating scrub will instantly give your skin that bit of extra relief that it needs. Remember, if your skin is red, it’s irritated in some way or another, and so it’s essential that you avoid further irritation that could be caused from skincare products.
Beauty products aren’t they only issue though, and while you may not have considered this potential cause, it’s perfectly possible that your skin redness is being brought on by something else - perhaps what you’re eating? If you suspect that your red skin is being caused by an allergy or intolerance, it might be worth starting a food diary and recording when your redness seems to soothe, versus when it flares up. Food diaries often prove to be incredibly telling with these sorts of things, and save us a lot of money in the long run as we aren’t forking out for expensive skincare products on repeat.
If you’ve addressed your diet and you’ve adjusted your skincare routine accordingly and you’re still in a battle with your rouge-tinted visage, then it may be time to consult your GP. Your doctor may choose to prescribe you with something that will help combat the redness, and may even conduct further tests to determine the root cause.
3. What are the best skincare products for redness?
These are a few of the products I'm particularly loving right now - all of which are great for targeting redness and encouraging a healthy, radiant, even-looking complexion |
When it comes to how to treat red skin, the main thing to keep in mind is that mild formulas are a must, and that astringent, alcohol-rich skincare products are a massive no-no. If your skin is red, then this usually signals that your complexion needs to be nurtured and that extra nourishment from moisturising skincare products is necessary.
My advice would be to steer clear of face washes that foam up too much, and opt for cleansing oils or cleansing milks, instead - both of which are much more soothing. Toner wise, again, focus on moisturising formulas as opposed to those that dry out the skin. I'd actually recommend investing in a good face spritz rather than a traditional toner. I'm currently loving the Revolution Skincare Superfruit Essence Spray. And finally, make absolutely sure that you have access to a great moisturiser, a nourishing facial oil and an overnight mask treatment.
A great nighttime skin routine is absolutely essential for everyone, irrespective of our skin type or how old we are, as this is when our complexion truly repairs itself.
Here are some of the best products for redness that I’m confident you will love:
- The Ordinary Plant Derived Squalane
- Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate
- Nivea Q10 Power Sleeping Melt-In Mask
- Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream
- Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser
A strong skincare routine is essential when combatting redness |
4. How to disguise redness with makeup?
Hopefully the above skincare tips for redness will really help alleviate the issue, but of course, if you're feeling particularly self-conscious about your skin, you can always rely on the magic of makeup to transform your complexion.
Masking redness using makeup is really easy, and so long as you have a great foundation and concealer, you're pretty much good to go. The one thing I would like to over-emphasise when it comes to makeup and redness is that it's best to not overdo it. Even if your skin has flared up quite noticably, if at all possible, I would urge you to avert thick, heavy foundations, and focus more on concealing the specific areas of concern.
For a decent coverage foundation that won't suffocate the skin, look no further than the MAC Studio Fix Fluid. Another great option is the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder foundation, which has a buildable coverage.
And for concealer, the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer is a complete failsafe. I am also loving the Maybelline Instant Anti Age Eraser Concealer right now - it's fab and so affordable. I will share a full review of the Maybeline Instant Anti Age Eraser Concealer very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
But for now, that's just about it! I really hope you enjoyed this blog post & I hope I've covered everything. If you do have any more questions in relation to dealing with red skin, please do let me know by either messaging or dropping a comment in the box below.
Until next time, lovelies!
Lots of love,
Grace x
