Primer is one of those makeup products that’s only really become a ‘thing’ so to speak in the last decade or so. In fact, I don’t think I even knew what a primer was until about 5 years ago. Previous to that, I was going straight from moisturiser to foundation. Imagine that now?! I shudder at the thought!
Obviously I’m kidding - but on a more serious note, I am extremely grateful for makeup primer. It really does make such a difference to the staying power of my makeup and the overall finish of my makeup. Could I live without it? Well, yes. But would I really want to? Not really, no.
Anyway, whilst I do have a few long-standing favourite primers that I continue to go back to, I do like to switch it up every now and again and experiment with different brands and different formulas. And my most recent primer investment has taken form in the Makeup Revolution Hydrate and Prime Hydrating Primer.
The Makeup Revolution Hydrate Primer |
At approximately £7 per tube (depending on where you buy from), this radiance-boosting primer sits at the lower end of the scale when it comes to price point. But how does it fair compared to other primers I’ve used in the past? And is it clear to see why some other makeup primers cost so much more?
I’ve been using this Makeup Revolution primer now for about 3 weeks and I’m getting on with it pretty well, actually - but I can’t sit here and say it’s the best primer I’ve ever used. Because it isn’t.
On the plus side, after application, my skin really does feel hydrated, which is exactly what the product claims to do - hydrate the skin. I always lean towards hydrating formulas and sourcing out the best primers for radiance is an ongoing thing for me. But like I say, whilst I do like the way this product makes my skin feel, I’m not wowed by it.
One of the biggest drawbacks for me with this affordable makeup primer is that the formula itself is just too runny. The consistency of the primer is very milky and so squeezing out too much product and ultimately wasting the product is pretty much an every day problem of mine, meanwhile the end result just isn’t as impressive as that I’ve seen with other primers in the past.
Personally, I tend to prefer primers with a thicker, more tacky consistency as this allows for greater control both when squeezing the product out of the packaging, and of course, when applying the product. I’m a particularly big fan of the NARS Radiance Primer, the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow and Stila 10 In 1 HD Illuminating Beauty Balm (this one also doubles up a bit of a tinted moisturiser, which I love!) - and sadly the Revolution primer just doesn’t sit in the same league as this trusty trio.
Don’t get me wrong, though - I don’t dislike the product. It’s a pleasant product to use and it hasn’t caused me any issues, as such. I’ll continue to use the primer until I run out of porridge - sadly I just wouldn’t be in a rush to repurchase, which is a shame as I love discovering the best drugstore makeup products to add to my cosmetic collection.
If you’re looking for a cheap makeup primer that will slot into your everyday makeup routine effortlessly and won’t cause you to break the bank in the process, then this primer is well worth trying out. If on the other hand, you’re searching for something with a little more pizazz that’s really going to enhance your makeup look and give you that wow-factor, then I’d recommend spending more and trying out one of the luxury makeup primers I mentioned previously.
I’m going to do a blog post all about how to choose the perfect primer for your skin type very soon, so be sure to keep an eye out for that coming your way shortly. In the meantime, I hope you all really enjoyed this blog post & I look forward to sharing more with you very soon.
Until next time!
Lots of love,
Grace x
