When it comes to makeup, for me, you just can’t beat those classic, timeless looks. The likes of a fiery red lip to complement a set of perfectly-preened jet black lashes. The iconic smokey eye. The sexy, summer bronzed makeup look.
And of course, the one that we turn to most often - the fresh & youthful dewy makeup look.
With its radiant base, bright under-eyes and soft, peachy-pink lips, it’s no wonder this makeup look is so sought after. It’s one of those that works on any skin tone, at any time, to any occasion. Always reliable & always effective.
So, for today’s blog post I thought I would give the youthful makeup look the moment in the spotlight it deserves, and share with you all my top tips on how to get that everyday glow-up.
Let’s get to it.
My favourite products for creating this look |
My Top Tips For A Youthful Dewy Makeup Look
1. Always wear a radiance boosting primer
Matte makeup is perfect for nights out or big events when extra staying power is a priority. But for an everyday luminous & youthful glow, it’s important to prioritise products that boost radiance. For this reason, it’s essential that you invest in a glowy primer.
Primer is such a fabulous product. Not only will it help fix your makeup in place, if you choose the right one, it’ll help create that lit from within glow that we all crave. A couple of my favourite radiance boosting primers include the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, NARS Radiance Primer and - although technically not a primer - the MAC Strobe Cream, which is available in a selection of different shades.
Looking for the best drugstore primer for glowing skin? The NYX Born To Glow is a great affordable alternative to the MAC Strobe Cream.
2. Opt for medium coverage foundation rather than full coverage
Full coverage foundation is great, but it can look cakey, which is the opposite of what we want to achieve with this look, so my advice would be to opt for a sheer to medium coverage foundation, instead.
I love trying and testing different foundations, but the one I always come back to and recommend to everyone is the NARS Sheer Glow. This product is a cult classic for a reason, and it really does effortlessly achieve that ‘your skin but better’ look. I’ve got the NARS sheer glow in a few diffeeent shades just because I tan, but mostly I stick to the NARS Sheer Glow Fiji, which is light with golden undertones. It’s gorgeous and perfect for my skin tone.
I absolutely adore the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation - it's an absolute must-have |
3. Always go 2-3 shades lighter with concealer
This tip is particularly important to bear in mind when concealing the under eyes, as this is an area that we really want to brighten and draw attention to.
The difference that this simple technique makes to the whole makeup look is honestly insane. It instantly enhances radiance and creates the illusion of the perfect complexion.
This makeup technique is also a handy one to remember on those mornings when you wake up sleep deprived or feeling a little worse for wear after one too many prosecco's. Let’s face it - we’ve all been there, ladies.
4. A light dusting of bronzer is key
I’ll happily admit that I can get a little heavy handed when it comes to bronzer, but for this look, we really want to keep things fresh, so it’s important that we strip things back a little and avoid over-applying anything.
In terms of formula, this is all down to personal preference really and what you find easier/suits your skin better - but for me, powder bronzer is 100% the way to go.
I’ve been using my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Medium Tan for years and it’s never let me down. It’s the perfect mid-tone bronzer and the finish is just so natural. A couple of other bronzers that I’d recommend include the Benefit Hoola Bronzer and NARS Laguna Bronzer, which is also available as a liquid bronzer (I have the liquid and it’s gorgeous!)
5. Apply blusher
Blusher is one of those makeup products that a lot of people shy away from, but if you’re still nervous about the idea of having ridiculous rosy cheeks, please please don’t be. Blusher is such a wonderful product - you just have to find the right shade to suit your skin, and to apply very very lightly.
My favourite blusher and another NARS product that’s earned beauty cult classic status is the NARS Orgasm blusher. I occasionally switch things up, but this is always the one I come back to - and that’s because it’s just so beautiful. I feel like this shade is one of those that would work pretty much on any skin tone, but there are a number of different colours as part of the NARS blush collection, so be sure to check out others in the range if this isn’t quite your bag.
Charlotte Tilbury do some gorgeous blushers, too, so it may be worth taking a look at those as well.
Who else adores the NARS Orgasm Blusher? It's got to be the most beautiful pink ever! |
6. Avoid heavy eye makeup
There’s a time and a place for a sultry smokey eye, but this isn’t it. For this look, it’s all about looking fresh and fabulous, but still glamorous - and we can achieve this result using just a small selection of products.
To get those eyes popping, I recommend investing in a. Good quality white eyeliner to open up the eyes a little more, a brown eye liner and a volumising mascara.
I don’t know about you guys but eye liner is something that even after 13 years, I still haven’t entirely mastered - but I do find that brown eyeliners are easier to use than black ones. They just blend in that little more seamlessly and the finish is more natural from the get-go, which makes things instantly easier.
Mascara wise, feel free to bring the drama. This look is basically a natural glam, so we’re stripping things back - but thick, long lashes are always welcome to the party. My favourite mascara at the minute is the Max Factor Volume Infusion Mascara.
7. Opt for a pretty pink lip
Autumn makeup may be all about the browns and the berries but this look is about the pinks and the peaches. So, if you haven’t already, then now is the time to start shopping for the perfect pink lipstick.
Every woman needs one perfect pink nude lipstick in her makeup bag, and for me, MAC Angel comes up trumps every time. To emphasise my lips and give them a good old plumping up, I start by slightly over-lining with my MAC Whirl Lip Pencil before filling in the lips with my trusty Angel lippie. Love it.
MAC Angel Frost Lipstick is my absolute go-to when it comes to plumping up my pout |
8. Apply a dewy setting spray
And last but not least, to really toe this look together and get that overall fresh dewy finish, a dewy setting mist is an absolute must.
I’ve used so many different setting sprays in my time, but the ones that stand out to me as being the most effective are the MAC Prep & Prim Fixing Spray, the PIXI Rose Glow Mist and the L’Oreal Shake & Glow Setting Mist. What’s also great about this trio of products is that they all sit at different price points, meaning there’s one to suit every budget.
