HOW TO ADOPT A MORE SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY REGIME - 5 TOP TIPS FOR A MORE ETHICAL BEAUTY ROUTINE.

Sustainability - it's the word that's on everybody's lips right now. And that's because we are finally waking up & acknowledging the harsh reality before us - we need to act now. Otherwise, we will be much too late.

If like the majority of us, you have a Netflix account, then it’s likely you’ll have seen David Attenborough’s documentary on there. If you haven’t watched it, then make sure you do. If you have watched it, and you’re on a mission to make changes to your lifestyle as a result, then read on.

A lot of what Sir David Attenborough discusses in this programme is to do with wildlife and how our diets in particular ought to be adjusted in order to reverse the devastation that has been and continues to be inflicted on our planet.

However, it isn’t just the food that we eat that needs to be addressed. There are many, many ways in which we can improve sustainability and adopt a more eco-friendly way of living.

And by making a few changes to our beauty routines and the beauty products we buy, we can start doing our bit as we beautify ourselves. What could be better?!

I’m all about saving the planet - I always have been - so for me, this is a great place to start.

1. Reuse makeup bottles and containers

Several beauty brands now run recycle / reuse programs by which customers take their empty containers and either have them refilled, or returned to the beauty counter to be recycled.

I’ve been doing the 'Back 2 MAC' programme for years, but there are other beauty giants offering similar services, too.

2. Apply less product

We’ve all been overzealous with our skincare and makeup at some point or another, but if you can resist the temptation to layer on the products, they’ll last much longer and you won’t need to continue purchasing all those single-use plastics quite so often.

3. Say goodbye to single use plastics

And that last point leads me into this next one - saying a swift ‘see ya later’ to single use products in general.

In fairness, I think the vast majority of beauty products are widely recycled. However, there are some that aren’t. So, if you know that there are items in your makeup bag or wash bag that aren’t eco-friendly, use up what’s left in them and when all the product is gone, discontinue use.

4. Opt for larger sized products

One really simple way to reduce your environmental impact when it comes to beauty is to opt for the larger sizes when you purchase.

Bigger bottles and containers last longer than smaller ones (obviously) so not only is the value for money usually a lot better, but you’ll also consume a lot less plastic as a result, too (two smaller bottles will likely carry more packaging than one larger one.)

The final point to make on this one is that if products are being shipped to you, purchasing in bulk or going for the larger sizes means that you’ll order less frequently and therefore reduce environmental impact even more.

5. Recycle, recycle, recycle!

And last but by no means least, a bit of an obviously one really, but a gentle reminder that is sometimes needed - recycle!

If the items you use are recyclable, make sure you do recycle them. From the outer packaging, to the bottle, canister, tube or whatever else it might be, make the extra effort to recycle every bit of packaging possible. Every little helps.

I really hope you all enjoyed this post and I can’t wait to share more with you soon:

Lots of love,
