If there’s one environment in particular that my skin hates to be in, it’s that of an aircraft. The combination of recycled air, air conditioning and general lack of fresh air wreaks havoc on my skin - and let’s face it, a dull, tired-looking complexion is the last thing we want on our first full day on vacation!
I used to be one of those women that always travels wearing a full face of makeup, totally glammed up to the nines. But if there’s one thing that summer holidays have taught me (other than the fact I need more of them) it’s that the presence of makeup does absolutely no favours for the complexion when travelling a mile-high in the sky.
These days, I focus less on makeup, and more on skincare, ultimately prioritising how to take care of my skin whilst flying.
And with mine, Marc & Eric’s first family holiday fast approaching, now feels like the perfect time to share my in-flight skincare routine with you all. So, if like me, those tell-tale signs of post-flight skin are even more obvious than your Monday morning bed-head, then this is the post for you.
So let’s get to it. It’s time to talk skincare tips for flying.
How to keep your skin looking beautiful in-flight
1. Go makeup free
First and foremost, be sure to board your flight completely fresh-faced. Or, if you're planning on taking some all-important airport selfies and can’t bear the thought of doing so without a scrap of makeup on, don’t forget to grab some makeup remover pads or micellar water before you board the plane. Better yet, if you want to be super prepared and avoid a trip to Boots in the airport, grab this Dear Dahlia Skin Conditioning Micellar Water from Lookfantastic ahead of your flight. It's travel-sized, and the conditioning formula means it's super hydrating - perfect for flying.
When I fly, I like to take extra special care of my skin pre-flight. I always dedicate extra time to cleansing, toning and moisturising so that everything feels super nourished and fresh. I'm currently obsessed with Facetheory skincare products and I am currently working on a blog post all about this wonderful brand, so stay tuned for that!
Going makeup-free on your flight will allow your skin to breathe easily, which it otherwise wouldn’t. Save your Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation for a glam night out, instead.
2. Have one or two sheet masks at the ready
Is it just me that’s completely obsessed with sheet masks right now?
I honestly can’t get enough of them, and I’ve made it one of my beauty missions to pin-down the best moisturising sheet masks/the best sheet masks for glowing skin. I think I’ll do a separate blog post on this, so stay tuned for that!
But for now, I’d highly recommend the GRnier Moisture Bomb sheet masks. They’re super affordable and there are loads of different options to choose from. Personally, I like the Garnier Moisture Bomb Sakura Hydrating Face Sheet Mask and the Garnier Moisture Bomb Pomegranate Hydrating Sheet Mask the best, but I've tried lots of others from the range, too, and they've all been gorgeous!
3. Always take an eye cream
If you ask me, a day without eye cream is one of the ultimate skincare sins - I just have to wear it!
And when my skin is seriously lacking hydration from all that in-flight air-conditioning, I rely on my trust tube of eye serum even more than usual.
I’m currently using (and loving) the Facetheory Ocuwake Eye Cream. It’s long-lasting, affordable, effective and has a five-star rating based on over 700 customer reviews. It's definitely one of the best eye creams I've ever used.
4. Take a good lip balm on-board
Having dry, chapped lips is never a good look - and a peely pout doesn’t feel great, either.
Fortunately, keeping your lips lovely and moisturised whilst flying couldn’t be easier. All you need is a good lip balm to hand.
A couple of my favourite lip balms include the Lanolips tinted lip balm (I love the shades rose and rhubarb) and the Carmex Strawberry Lip Balm. Both of these lip balms contain SPF too, which makes them extra-handy when travelling to sunnier pastures.
5. Collagen eye masks are a must
I’m new to the collagen eye mask hype, but I’ve got to say, now that I’m on the bandwagon, I’m staying right where I am.
Collagen eye masks are fab, and the fact that there are now so many brands that do them means that there’s something to suit every budget.
When it comes to the best affordable collagen eye masks, I love the Gatineau Collagene Expert Smoothing Eye Pads. But if you fancy a splurge, the MZ Skin Hydra-Bright Golden Eye Treatment Masks are very luxurious!
6. Don’t forget your hydrating face mist
And finally, providing you don’t exceed the 30ml liquid limit (or you buy in duty free before boarding your flight), be sure to have a good facial mist to hand.
I’m a teeny bit face spritz mad, so I could talk about them for quite literally hours - but if you’re looking for the best face mist - and more specifically, the best travel size face mist - then the Indie Lee CoQ-10 Facial Toner Travel Size 30ML - £10 from Selfridges.
And that’s just about it!
I really hope you enjoyed this blog post & I can’t wait to share more beauty posts with you again very soon!
Lots of love,
Grace x
