HOW TO BE A GIRL BOSS.

Being ambitious and wanting to be successful has always meant something to me. Even when I was very little, I always knew that I wanted to have a good job and make my own money. I wanted to feel fulfilled in what I was doing and enjoy my working life. For some people, I guess work becomes a way of making ends meet, and I can completely understand how that happens. Life is constantly throwing challenges and curve balls at us, and so work can become a real chore. Let's face it, 6am alarms have never - and will never - be fun, but if you're waking up every morning to something that you enjoy doing, everything feels, well, different.

I've been unhappy in jobs before. In fact, I'd say that the job I'm in now is the first one in which I've felt completely content. In all honesty, it's pretty much my dream job. I blog and write about beauty, fashion and life for one of the biggest fashion retailer groups in the UK - and I genuinely do feel so lucky to be in this position. I've landed completely on my feet and I finally feel completely happy in what I do.

Of course, it wasn't all down to luck that I landed this role, though. Getting to where you want to be takes a lot of hard work, trust me, and whilst I have no doubt that I will continue to progress in my career, I count myself very fortunate that I'm happy in what I do. I know of so many women that despise their jobs and genuinely wake up every morning with that feeling of dread, knowing that they are going back to that place that they really, really dislike. It's sad, but it really doesn't have to be that way.

If you're sat there now asking yourself the question 'am I truly happy at work?' then hopefully, I'm getting through to you and I'm not just rambling on for no reason. In this blog post I want to educate you all in what it means to be happy in work, and how to become the ultimate 'Girl Boss'. Being a girl boss is so much more than just sharing a little quote on Instagram and fantasising about the amazing future that you're dreaming of. Being a girl boss is about taking those dreams and aspirations and making them a reality. Being a girl boss is about having the confidence in yourself to walk away from whatever is making you unhappy, and being bold enough to make positive changes to your life.

My own career - albeit much shorter than lots of other women reading this, I'm sure - has certainly had its ups and downs (understatement of the century), but the one thing that's always been a constant is my blog. There have been times where I've genuinely felt like giving up my blog and letting negative comments get to me - if you too are a blogger, you'll know the type - 'why does she spend all her time blogging?', 'why does she hashtag everything on Instagram?' - I've heard all the negative comments and I've no doubt that they'll continue to circle without my knowing, but I honestly am so past caring. I fully believe that the time and dedication that I've spent working hard on my blog, and even investing money into my blog, is the reason that I am so happy with where I am today. And that brings me onto my next point - finding something you're passionate about.

Finding your passion can sound like a really huge, daunting thing. I mean, is it even natural for every single person in the whole entire world to have a genuine passion? Perhaps not. However, I am a firm believer in that every single person has something they're good at. It could be something earth shatteringly ground-breaking, or it could be something smaller or simpler. The way I try to look at this is the way I view my friends and family. I can name a handful of great things about each and every one of my close ones, and these qualities are things that these people might not even recognise in themselves. Things like being a great listener, offering great advice and always being able to cheer people up are all great qualities to have, and they're traits that are actually really quite hard to come across. It's all about focusing on what's great about you and working to your own advantages.

My Top 5 Tips for Being The Ultimate Girl Boss

Once you've found the thing that you're great at or you're passionate about, you are officially well on your way to becoming the girl boss that you've always dreamed of being. It's time to turn your dreams into a reality and live a life of excitement, fulfillment and happiness. Here are my top tips on how to be the ultimate girl boss.

1. Work Hard - Every Single Day

This is literally so important. You've probably heard it before and it probably sounds really obvious and even cliche, but there's nothing more important than working hard and giving what you're passionate about your complete all. When I first started blogging, I did perhaps one blog post every two weeks - sometimes even just one a month. I didn't spend enough time planning or thinking about what I could share. Instead, I just kind of rushed through posts, pulled a little bit of content together and clicked 'post'. When I look back, the content I shared was fairly pointless, really. I always wanted my blog to be great, but I was so distracted by other things (mostly bad relationships) that I rarely found or made the time to make blogging a priority. Blogging would have actually been a great bit of respite for me, but I let it become a chore, which is something I really regret.

Nowadays, I'm constantly brainstorming ideas for future posts and things that I can share. I want my content to be helpful and enjoyable to read and I'm willing to work super hard to make my blog as great as it possibly can be. I've still got a long way to go, and the hard work is never going to stop, but you know what, I enjoy every second of what I do, and I wouldn't change a thing.

2. Find Your UPS (Unique Selling Point)

What's your UPS? UPS stands for Unique Selling Point, and it's a term that's often used in marketing and in business. Your UPS is basically the amazing and unique thing about you that sets you apart from every other person out there. In the world of blogging, it might be the fact that you're a beauty blogger with a huge passion for skincare, but you actually suffer terribly from acne. Ever heard of Em Ford? Em rocketed into the limelight after sharing a string of hard-hitting Instagram posts about the troubles she faced with her skin, and the cruel backlash from trolls as a result. Exposing her true, makeup-free self to the world must have felt like the most difficult and terrifying thing ever, but in doing so, men and women all over the world found a role model that they could finally really relate to. Em taught the world that it's okay to have flaws and imperfections, and she earned an enormous amount of respect in doing so.

3. Be Kind, Always

My mum and dad always taught me the importance of being kind and humble, and to this day I truly do believe that these two traits are completely invaluable. At the end of the day, no matter how talented, beautiful or wealthy you are, if you aren't a very nice person, people will quickly lose respect for you. In my life, I've had runnings and experiences with a number of unpleasant people, and in a way, I almost thank them. Whilst my memories of these people aren't fond ones, without realising it, they've given me the motivation and determination to be the best version of myself that I possibly can be.

4. Never Stop Learning

Teaching yourself new things and being open to the possibility of continuing to learn is something that's honestly just so important. I feel as though I'm still learning new things every day, and the skills that I've developed even in the 6 months of being in my new job are things that have proven incredibly helpful. Sometimes, people make the false assumption that as soon as they leave college or university, they're done learning, but in actual fact, we learn way more from our own experiences than we ever did in a classroom. If you feel like you aren't learning many new things, set yourself a challenge. Perhaps you'd like to learn another language? Or maybe you'd like to start cooking more? All those things that you really want to do, but never actually do, are the exact things that you really need to do! Put yourself out there and realise your full potential. You never know who you'll meet or the amazing opportunities that will arise as a result of your efforts.

5.  Positive Vibes Only

And finally, I can't stress the importance of exhaling the negative and inhaling the positive enough. Particularly these days with all the negativity on social media - trolling and cyber bullying - it can be very, very difficult, especially if you are a young person, to get bogged down in all the pessimism and gloom.

I think it's really scary that we've all kind of got this unrealistic image in our heads of how we should look or how our life should be. There's something about that that makes me feel really uneasy. We're all guilty of being on our phones too much and not appreciating what's really going on around us, and I do believe that all the time we spend online really isn't good for us. Airbrushed images, cruel comments and so-called 'perfect' relationships can make us feel inadequate and as though we are doing something wrong, and it really isn't healthy. If at any point you are feeling the negative impact of social media, or anything else for that matter, take a break from it.

There is so much more to life than observing everybody else's through the screens of our phones, and as soon as you realise that, you'll instantly begin to feel more positive about your own existence. Embrace the good, and let go of the bad. It'll do you the world of good.

So there you have it, my top tips on how to embrace a happy, positive life and how to become the ultimate girl boss. There's no time like the present, so cease every opportunity that comes your way and remember that with the right attitude, you really are capable of anything.

I really hope you enjoyed this blog post, and I can't wait to share more with you soon.

Lots of love,
Grace x
