HOW TO MAKE YOUR MAKEUP LAST LONGER.

I don’t know about you, but for me, doing my makeup is therapeutic. I know that some women find the whole thing a little bit monotonous and as though they just ‘have’ to do it, but I genuinely enjoy the whole process. I love using fresh, clean brushes and I love playing around with new products. Makeup is a huge hobby of mine and I love the confidence that it gives me. However, with all of that said, it can be really frustrating when makeup doesn’t last as long as I want it to.

It’s taken me a long time to reach a happy middle with my makeup and through trying out lots of different products and brands, I’ve learnt a lot about how to apply my makeup and how to make it last as long as possible. I often hear girls talking about how their makeup is sliding off their face by the end of the day, or it begins to look blotchy by the time they’re leaving work to go home. I vaguely remember having these issues with my own makeup, but I’ve managed to pick up some really great tips over the years, and they’re actually really simple, too!

In this blog post, I’m going to share with you everything I know about making makeup last for as long as possible.

My Top Tips for Making Your Makeup Last Longer

1. Use Primer

Primer is one of those products that so many women still don’t use, but every woman should most definitely use! If I’m completely honest, it took me absolutely ages to jump onto the primer bandwagon but as soon as I did, I totally understood what the hype was all about.

The idea of primer is pretty much exactly what this blog post is about - making your makeup stay put for as long as possible. There are tons of amazing primers out there and depending on the type of finish you like your makeup to have, there are lots of different options in terms of what there is to choose from. As I like a fresh, dewy finish and a nice luminous glow, I’m always drawn to primers that glisten and have a bit of a pearly glow to them. I particularly love the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow and the NYX Born To Glow primer - I think I’ll always go back to these ones! You can read more about the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer in my blog post 'Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow - Girls, You Need This.'

2. Don’t Apply Too Much

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your makeup if you want it to stand the test of time is applying too much. This might sound a little bit silly and perhaps it doesn’t make sense when you first read it, but applying too much makeup means that the makeup is almost layered on and it’s more likely to wear off in patches. Rather than applying tons of makeup all at once, pack a few essentials into your handbag and top up throughout the day instead. I always carry my KIKO Full Coverage Concealer, a MAC lipstick and my NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner. I’m never without my KIKO setting spray, either, and speaking of that...

3. Invest In A Good Setting Spray

I was faithful to the MAC Prep & Prime Fix Plus setting spray for years but after recently discovering the KIKO Prime and Fix Refreshing Mist, I’ve jumped ships! For more information on how to prep and prime your skin for makeup, make sure you check out my 'How To Prep and Prime Your Skin' blog post.

Setting sprays are such an amazing thing and actually one of my favourite makeup bag essentials. Setting always, like primers, promise different finishes depending on what you’re looking for. I always opt for dewy finishes, but if you like a matte finish, there are sprays for that, too.

Not only will a setting spray help your makeup stay in place for longer, it’ll keep you feeling fresh throughout the day, too. Carrying a setting spray around in your bag during the summer months is such a great idea if you like to feel fresh and cool!

This was me at Chester Races last week. It was SO hot and so it was extra important that my makeup had great staying power

4. Allow Your Moisturiser To Absorb Before Applying Any Makeup

The way in which you apply your makeup is so important, and timing is everything.

If you tend to apply your makeup almost immediately after applying your skincare products, particularly your moisturiser or oil, you may find that your makeup slides off fairly quickly.

5. Use a Translucent Setting Powder

Translucent setting powders are a must-have for all red carpet regulars and makeup artists, which means you should invest in one, too! You’re worth it, after all!

There are many great translucent setting powders available on the market, but the one that everybody swears by is the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. Don’t get me wrong, this stuff isn’t cheap, but it definitely stands the test of time, just like your face will!

I really hope you enjoyed this blog post and can’t wait to share more with you soon!

Have a lovely weekend, darlings!

Lots of love,
Grace x
