When it comes to my skin, I’ll do just about anything to make sure it’s looking as good as it can do. I’ve tried a one of different products over the years and that, together with plenty of water and always staying firmly hydrated has brought me to a very happy place with my skin. In terms of beauty, having healthy skin sits right at the top of my list of priorities and in this blog post, I want to share with you my top tips so that you can transform your complexion and get that enviable, radiant glow.
How To Make Your Skin Glow
Depending on the type of skin that you have, you may want to adapt this rule to suit your own personal needs. Those with oily skin may wish to exfoliate up to three times a week (I wouldn’t recommend anything more frequent than this) and those with a dryer complexion may prefer to limit this to once a week. At the end of the day, you know your skin better than I do, but if there’s one thing I would say, it’s to make sure that you are exfoliating your skin every week.
So, why is exfoliating our skin so important? Well, what exfoliating our skin does is slough away all the dirt and grime sitting on surface of our skin, and gently massage away the very top layer of skin. By exfoliating your skin once or twice a week, you are essentially helping your body to remove that very top layer of skin and reveal the fresh, healthy skin underneath. If we don’t exfoliate our skin, our complexion can become a little rough and the risk of breakouts is increased.
In order to exfoliate effectively, you should apply a very light amount of pressure and that’s it. If you’re using a good product, there’s no need to scrub hard - this will only aggravate your skin and make it red and sore. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it isn’t pretty! If you’re on the lookout for a new exfoliator, I would strongly recommend the No7 Total Renewal Micro-dermabrasion Face Exfoliator from Boots. This exfoliator is currently the only one I use - and has been for about 8 months. It’s amazing, and it’s completely affordable, too. If you’d like to read more about this scrub, head over to my blog post ‘Getting Perfect Skin With The No7 Microdermabrasion Exfoliator.'
Right now, I am absolutely loving tinted moisturiser! I’m currently using one from Stila and it’s just absolutely amazing. During the summer months, I prefer not to mask my skin and I like that tinted moisturiser allows my ‘real skin’ to shine through. Foundations are heavier than tinted moisturiser and the creamy texture of these lighter alternatives feels great on the skin.
Another great thing about tinted moisturiser is that it automatically gives the skin a radiant, dewy finish. The texture of tinted moisturiser is creamy and the finish is dewy, as opposed to matte.
If you’re currently on the lookout for an alternative to your foundation and want to try something lighter, I strongly recommend the Stila Stay All Day 10-In-1 HD Illuminating Beauty Balm. This stuff has become my holy grail summer go-to and i just absolutely adore the way it looks and feels. Irs so lightweight and it makes my skin look incredible. Want that glow? This stuff is a must.
Depending on your skin tone and skin type, you may wish to experiment with a fake tan for your face. I’ve been using facial tanners for years and in the summer, especially, having that extra healthy glow gives me the confidence to go makeup free and let my skin breathe.
If you haven’t used a facial tanner before, there are a few things to take into consideration before you go spending tons of money on something that might not work so great. First of all, be sure to check that the formula is completely ‘non comedonegenic’ - this basically means that the tanner has been specially created with ingredients that won’t block your pores. Tanned, glowing skin shouldn’t come at the cost of a painful breakout, so do your research!
Next, I would always encourage checking what shade the tanner says it is. If you’re naturally very fair skinned, going for a tanner that will make you ‘very dark’ probably isn’t such a good idea. The chances are it will wear off in unsightly patches and of course, you don’t want your face to be 5 shades darker than the rest of your body!
Finally, look at some fake tans for your body, too. As I just said, it’s important to make sure that everything is blending together nicely and so it’s good to use a body tanner, too. I love the St Tropez Original Bronzing Mousse for my body, and the Clarins Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster for my face. These products are ones that I always go back to, and I’d recommend them to anyone! For more about fake tan and how to get it right, check out my 'How To Fake Tan Like a Professional' blog post.
4. Drink Lots Of Water
I won’t go on about this one too much, as you all know how important it is already! Drinking lots of water is one sure-fire way to ensure that your skin is healthy and glowing from within. It’s the one thing we can feed our skin to make it look great without breaking the bank. Where I live, the tap water is absolutely great, so if you too have that privilege, make the most of it!
And finally, moisturising your skin is just so important if you want a complexion that’s healthy and flowing. Moisturiser locks in goodness and feeds your skin to leave it plumped up and looking fabulous. Depending on your skin type, you may wish to experiment with lighter or heavier formulas to give your skin what it needs to look it’s best. Personally, I prefer facial oils as opposed to cream formulas, as I find oils really do give me that fresh, youthful glow that I love.
If you’re looking for a good facial oil, I strongly recommend trying the Clarins Lotus Oil. This oil is great for those with oily and combination skin who are worried about breakouts. You can read more about Clarins Lotus Oil by checking out my blog post 'My Clarins Lotus Oil Review'.
