A spa weekend at The Mere is something that’s always in my calendar. As soon as we’ve made a visit, we instantly look to get the next one booked in. It’s just a great place to unwind and forget about life’s everyday stresses & chores, and of course, indulging in a little treatment every now and again always makes the world of difference. If you'd like to read my last post about The Mere, you can check it out here: 'A Luxury Spa Break At The Mere Golf Resort & Spa.'
I have to say, usually, my fiancé, family and I tend just to use the spa facilities that are available as part of our booking - a range of steam rooms, a sauna, jacuzzi, pool, salt room (plus more!) but recently, having been offered the chance to sample a treatment & review it on here, I got myself booked in to try the full-body De-Stress Massage.
Anyone that knows me well will know just how often I moan about my back aching or that I’m in desperate need of a good back rub, so as soon as The Mere offered this to me, I couldn’t wait to check out the different massages on offer.
There were a few different options for me to choose from and I have to say, every single one of the treatments sounded amazing. However, as I was so desperately in need of a good old massage - and one that would leave me feeling completely relaxed - the Destress Massage sounded like the perfect option.
Sitting to a desk all day at work and then leaning over my laptop to write blog posts when I get home means that my back is often in the exact same position for prolonged periods of time. For this reason (plus the fact I have very big boobs!) I do experience quite a bit of discomfort with my back at times.
However, after my Destress Massage, all that pain and discomfort completely dissolved.
My masseuse - who was just amazing, by the way! - paid such close attention to the areas that I made her aware of (neck, back and shoulders) and applied a reasonable amount of pressure to these areas in order to relieve my complaints.
When it comes to massages, I am happy for therapists to apply as much as necessary in order to get the best results - so before any of you think that my masseuse didn’t ask me about this, I’d like to confirm that she definitely did. In fact, I specifically asked her to apply as much pressure as possible to make me feel better.
Smoothing on the incredible Aromatherapy Associates massage oils and using her fingers, hands and forearms to relieve tension, my masseuse was able to locate each and every one of the knots in my neck and back - and even found one that she believed had been there for ‘a good few years’!
I know, I was shocked, too!
After locating the knots, my therapist applied added pressure and used her fingers to ‘dissolve’ the knots and leave me feeling completely pain-free.
I’m not sure how many of you have had professional massages before, but just to clarify, the reason that I use the term ‘dissolved’ when talking about the release of the knots in my back is because that literally is exactly what happens when those knots are relieved.

I actually didn’t know this before my massage at The Mere, but as well as being an amazing masseuse, my therapist was also very clued-up on the technical/more scientific side of massages. So, when I asked her what a knot actually is, she was able to give me an incredible answer - something I can now share with you lot, too!
So, in short, when we sit in the same position for prolonged periods of time, our body produces more lactic acid than normal (a substance we all create every day). This means that for those who work in office jobs or sit at a desk for hours at a time, that production of lactic acid is elevated & and excess acid then groups together and crystallises. These ‘crystals’ of acid cling to muscles in the back and form ‘knots’ - the annoying, painful clusters that masseuses like mine then have to manipulate with their hands to dissolve.
I know! It’s so interesting! So if you ever wondered why your knots made a ‘crunching’ noise when being massaged, it’s because the crystallised lactic acid is literally being crunched and dissolved by the therapist.
The fact that my masseuse had so much knowledge in what she was doing really impressed me - but it reassured me, too. I think that when any of us go and have treatments done - whether it’s our nails, hair, a massage or whatever - we like to know that we are in safe hands, and that’s exactly how I felt throughout my treatment at The Mere.
55 minutes later and officially fully massaged from top to toe, my masseuse took me over to the Relaxation Room, where there were a selection of super-comfy beds, glasses of water and of course, the addition of a beautiful spa-like aroma. Here I was told I could lie down and relax for as long as I felt I needed to before returning to the spa.
From start to finish, my treatment at The Mere was just absolutely amazing, and despite already having high expectations, the massage itself was even better than I had anticipated.
Our next visit to The Mere is in just a few short weeks and after my marvellous massage, I think I may just have to book in for another treatment. What does everyone think? A facial? A manicure? A pedicure? Or maybe even another massage?!
I hope you all loved this blog post as much as I enjoyed writing it & I can’t wait to share more with you all soon! In the meantime, though, be sure to check out my beauty, style & life blog posts for more great content!
As a final disclaimer, I would like to confirm that although this was a complimentary treatment gifted to me as a blogger, as always, all opinions/views/statements in this post are 100% honest. I would also not expect to be given free treatments continually - I would happily pay the full asking price for this treatment as it was just fabulous!
Lots of love (and happy weekend!),
Grace x
