I’ve tried and tested quite a few different primers now, but I kind of decided to stick with just one product after discovering the Nars Radiance Primer. You guys know just how much I love my radiant, dewy, glowy makeup looks, and I find that this primer in particular - our of all the others I have tried - really does create the most beautiful, radiant finish.
However, as well as running out of face wash whilst we were on our honeymoon, I also used up the last of my primer, so I decided to set fire to the rain and try something totally different. Brand wise, I would say I was completely open to what was available and in terms of cost, I wasn’t too fussy either. I just wanted to give something else a chance and to see if I could be surprised by another product, and potentially find something even more perfect than my beloved Nars.
After shopping around a little and checking our a few different products at a range of different prices, I finally settled on an Elf primer that I found in Forever 21. I didn’t actually even go in Forever 21 hoping to find a primer, but the incredible $5 price tag caught my eye just before the checkout, and I decided to give it a go.
I used to have a really skeptical view of cheaper cosmetic products, but more recently, I’ve kept an open mind and I have to say, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by a number of affordable, high street products. So, I hoped that this product would prove to be a worthwhile bargain buy, too.
Sadly, though, for me personally, this primer isn’t a product I would look to repurchase.
Things that I do like about this product are the fact that the packaging is pretty and of course, the price is so affordable. Unfortunately, though, the cons outweigh the pros in this case and opting for a cheaper product, hasn’t worked out as I’d hoped it would.
I feel that makeup and the qualities that a makeup product must feature really does vary so much from person to person. In my case, lightweight formulas that leave the skin looking fresh and radiant are so important, but for others, a matte finish and a fuller coverage are of utmost priority. So in that sense, we can’t all be the same, but for me, the texture of this primer is borderline velvety/greasy, and I’m really not a fan of how this formula feels on top of my skin.
I’ve tried not to compare this product too much to my trusty Nars, but when you really love a different formula, it can be hard not to pick up on those differences. And for me, one of the biggest differences between these two products is how they feel when I apply them. Unlike my Nars primer, which melts into the skin and has a ‘barely there’ feel to it, this primer from Elf cosmetics just seems to sit on the surface of my skin, and I’m very much aware of it being there.
Other things that I wasn’t too keen on with this primer include the fact that it doesn’t feel particularly moisturising or hydrating, and the fact that there is no evident enhancement to the complexion when applied. To me, primer should add a little bit of a glow to the skin and provide a touch of radiance - but with this product, I don’t notice that.
Ultimately, I think that the fact that this product hasn’t worked for me personally is because it’s so much different than what I’m used to using. I was drawn to the attractive price tag and I was intrigued to see how well I’d get on with such an affordable product. And on this occasion, unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out.
Although the Elf Hydrating Primer hasn't proven to be my favourite primer ever, I am definitely interested in trying more products from this brand, as I’ve heard so many great things. Elf is a highly affordable vegan beauty brand that specialises in both makeup and skincare alike, so if you’re vegan or you’re interested in cruelty free beauty, then this alone is a huge reason to give their products a go.
I really hope you all enjoyed this blog post and I can’t wait to share more with you all soon.
Lots of love and happy weekend,
Grace x
