HOW TO STOP BRUNETTE HAIR GOING BRASSY: MY BLUE SHAMPOO JOURNEY.

It’s the question that’s been on my lips for years, but for some reason, have never (well, until recently) actually properly looked into & sought a solution. I’ve literally been wondering how to stop my brunette hair going brassy ever since I started colouring my hair, and now finally, I’ve found the bombshell brunettes answer to those brassy tresses woes - blue shampoo.

Blue shampoo is something that until a few weeks ago, I’d never even heard of. In fact, if you’d have said ‘blue shampoo’ to me, I’d have been thinking more something along the lines of a blueberry flavoured shampoo. I mean, I’ve known what purple shampoo is for years - everybody knows what purple shampoo is, right? FYI, purple shampoo is used by blondes to prevent their tresses turning brassy.

Blue shampoo on the other hand, is for me and my fellow brunettes.

Enriched with blue pigment, blue shampoo - which is available from a selection of different brands - is designed to cancel out orange tones in brunette hair. Which is something that many of us brunettes struggle with, particularly after applying a darker brunette colour to our hair.

So basically, blue shampoo is a God-send.

Naturally, my hair is actually quite ashy toned, but since having highlights a few years ago and then layering a darker brunette on top to cancel out the blonde, the annoyance of my hair eventually turning brassy and orange-toned has been inevitable.

Now though, I’m hopeful that this is a thing of the past.

I’ve been using the Fanola No Orange Shampoo for just over three weeks now, and so far, I've got to say, I'm pretty impressed.

I must admit, I have also finally taken the advice of my hairdresser and stopped washing my hair every day, but even still, by now I am usually beginning to detect those first tell-tale brassy tones.

Since incorporating blue shampoo into my hair care routine, those pesky orange hues are nowhere to be seen. Instead, my hair looks ashy and cool in tone - just the way I like it.

It’s possibly a little too early in my blue shampoo journey to say exactly how long the effects of this product will last before I need to get back in the salon. But given that everything is going so well so far, I must say, I am feeling incredibly optimistic.

Desperately determined to swerve that tangerine-tint, when buying my blue shampoo, I also purchased a blue hair mask, too. The Fanola No Orange Mask is to be used in conjunction with the blue shampoo to help optimise results and prolong that post-salon look for as long as possible.

And again, it’s a thumbs up from me.

Hair masks needn’t be used every single day - once a week is usually enough, so don’t make the mistake of doing this every time you wash your hair. Instead, decide on one day each week in which to apply the hair mask. For me, it’s a Sunday night thing - face mask, hair mask, the lot - a proper good old pamper session.

I have read a couple of threads online about brunette hair going brassy, and some contributors suggest applying blue food colouring to the hair. I mean... just no. There are cost-effective beauty hacks, and then there are just really terrible ideas. This unfortunately falls into the latter. So unless you want a blue forehead and scalp to go with your blue barnet, I’d save the blue food colouring for the kitchen instead.

At a first glance, blue shampoo does look to be quite pricey, but when you properly weigh it up, it actually isn’t. I bought the biggest possible bottle I could of Fanola Blue Shampoo and considering you only need a small amount of product, the value for money is actually great. I can’t see myself needing to buy another bottle of blue shampoo or blue hair mask for a really long time, which I’m really happy about.

I want to provide the best possible review and feedback on my experience with blue shampoo, so I’m going to continue to update this blog post and keep you all in the loop with how I’m getting on with it. So be sure to stay tuned and pop back in a few weeks when I’ve been using the product a little bit longer.

In the meantime, I really hope you all found this blog post useful and I can’t wait to share more with you all very soon.

Until next time, lovelies!

Lots of love,
Grace x
