Firstly, happy new year everyone! Secondly, apologies the happy new year post is slightly late. What can I say? Mummy life is a busy life and sticking to a strict schedule with my blog isn’t quite as easy as it once was.
So, how is everyone doing? I hope you are all doing really well and that your start to 2021 has been a bright and happy one.
I, like the rest of us, will be glad to finally wave goodbye to the pure nightmare that has been the Covid-19 pandemic. But based on Boris’ announcement last night, it looks as though we still have quite a while to go yet.
Which isn’t exactly what we had hoped for when stepping into a new year and looking forward to better things. But you know what? I really am trying to see the silver lining in situations more - even this one - and I am determined to focus on the positives rather than the negatives.
It’s not easy, but you can actually train your mind to hone in on the good rather than the bad. And when you get there, everything really does begin to feel a whole lot better.
And this brain training so to speak is ultimately what inspired me to write this blog post.
I’m really not one for getting involved in the whole ‘new year, new me’ cliche. Because, well, it is exactly that, isn’t it? A cliche. Realistically, are any of us actually found to become new people in 2021? Are we actually going to be reborn again and suddenly become ‘perfect’ people? Of course not. And you know what, why should we want to change, anyway? I don’t know about you, but I honestly feel I am fabulous enough already, thank you very much!
Okay, I’ve gone off on a tangent (you see, what’s new? New year, Same old me.) What I was supposed to be getting on with was talking about the actual topic of this post - New Years resolutions.
Like I say, personally, I’m not a huge fan of them. However, what I would say is that the dawning of a new year does present the ideal opportunity to make various changes and - yes, I am going to say it - improvements to ourselves.
And by improvements, I absolutely don’t mean aesthetically. If you want a new nose or you’re finally planning on giving in to the loo filler craze, then you do you. But what I’m talking about is our morals, our behaviours, our careers and our habits. All of the things that fulfil us and make us happier people.
So, below I have listed a handful of resolutions that we would all benefit from moving forward - not just for 2021, but for the future in general. Let’s pioneer positive change in our lives & let’s be better for US. So here goes - the New Years resolutions we all should be making...
- Stop comparing ourselves to others
Instagram getting you down? Baffled by how people look so perfect all the time? Annoyed by the fact that everyone you follow seems to have the perfect setup going on? It’s time to take a step back. Let’s regroup with reality for a second here - none of it is real.
Okay, some of it it’s real, and I like the fact that a lot of people are now using their social media channels to be more honest and to share more ‘normal’ content. But when it comes to those perfectly sculpted selfies and those super round bums in cycling shorts, nine times out of then, there’s a lot of editing going on, and like the rest of us, at least 15 negative shots before finally (and reluctantly) going ‘okay, that one will have to do.’
If there’s just one thing you should stop doing in 2021 (and for the rest of eternity) it’s this. Your body is enough. Your face is enough. Your mind is enough. You are enough. Kapeesh. - Stop worrying about what other people think
This one is tricky, and I know that because I used to be the worlds biggest people pleaser. It’s only now that I properly reflect back that I can see just how far I have come with this, and actually, I feel proud of the fact that I’ve taken control and started to put myself first in certain situations. It sounds a tad cliche, but life really is too precious to spend all your time worrying about what other people think - how they perceive you, what they thought of how you handled such a thing, what you wore to whatever event, why you didn’t show up to that family do.
Seriously, there is absolutely nothing wrong with prioritising yourself. Period. - Get fit & healthy
But not just Because you want to look a 10 when you finally hit the beach this summer (please please PLEASE no summer lockdowns for the love of God. JUST NO.) Get fit and healthy for your mind, your body and your soul. If there’s one thing that the pandemic has reminded me of - it’s the fact that your health really is your wealth. Our bodies are the most valuable thing we will ever own because they are irreplacable and we only get ONE. So, really think about what you put into your body and how you treat it.
There are so many ways in which you can optimise your health and rake better care of your body. Eat more fruit and vegetables, avoid processed food and junk food, exercise for one hour every day. Lifestyle changes like these are invaluable. - Be more sustainable
I think this is something that a lot more of us are thinking about these days, and it’s great. I love that there are so many brands that are now doing their bit for the environment, and more specifically, I am just obsessed with all the innovative and inspiring ways In which we can make our beauty regimes more sustainable. - Take a break from your phone
Again, this one isn’t Easy, and it’s one that I think we’ve all pledged previously and failed miserably. But for me personally, this one is huge. Since becoming a mum, I am so much more mindful of how I spend my time and I just don’t want to be one of those people that misses out on the magic of everyday life because they are watching everything through the screen of their phone.
As a mum I want to be present and I want to be hands on. Sure, I will still be taking plenty of pictures of Eric - how can I not? He’s beautiful and adorable and amazing and... the list goes on. But no amount of pictures will ever justify that to anybody else. Needless to say, given my line of work and everything else, my phone Will never become a redundant object in my life. But never again will I be a mindless scroller. Waste. Of. Time.
So there you have it, my top 5 New Years resolutions for 2021! I really hope that this blog post inspired you to make positive change this year WITHOUT changing who you are as a person. 2021 is all about making amazing memories, being successful and embracing our health. Let's make 2021 fabulous!
I can't wait to share more with you very soon.
Lots of love,
Grace x
