HOW TO GET RID OF HYPERPIGMENTATION.

Whether you’ve got dark spots from sun damage, acne scarring, burns or picking (check out my post how to stop picking your skin forever), discoloration in our skin takes on many shapes and forms. And for many people, this common skin complaint is one that really takes its toll on our mood. We use concealer to mask red marks and heavy foundation to even out our hyperpigmentation. And whilst discoloration is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed of (it’s very normal!), knowing how to get rid of hyperpigmentation is something we'd all love the answer to.

These marks and ‘imperfections’ are essentially damaged skin, and, as you’ll probably already know, these marks won’t disappear on their own. Some minor marks may take a few months to shift, meanwhile other more notable imperfections could take years - they could even leave you permanently scarred.

The good news is that there are lots of products out there to help the many of us that have picked, prodded and poked at our skin. There are even devices and formulas to treat sun spots and lines (thank god for advanced skincare solutions.) So, if you’re at a loss and your discoloration is getting you down, you’ve arrived at the perfect place.

For this blog post, I’ve pulled together a selection of the best products for hyperpigmentation, as well as some of the best at home devices for discoloration. I hope you enjoy!

How to treat skin discoloration - the best products and ingredients for hyperpigmentation

1. Vitamin C

A powerful antioxidant that’s brimming with skin-loving benefits, vitamin C is one of the best ingredients for fading scars and reducing hyperpigmentation. And as well as brightening the skin, this ingredient has valuable anti-ageing properties, too. So, if smooth, even-looking skin is what you’re after (who isn’t?), then it’s time to shop for some vitamin c skincare products.

2. Alpha hydroxy acids (AKA AHA’s)

Alpha hydroxy acids, or as they’re more commonly known ‘AHA’s’ are having a major moment in the beauty world right now - and for good reason. Some of the most common AHA’s that are found in skincare products include lactic acid, glycolic acid and mandelic acid - and between them, they work wonders on the skin.

Some AHA’s are stronger in potency, and are advised to use once or twice per week as a mask. Others are slightly gentler, making them perfect for everyday use - these usually come in the form of serums, toners and overnight treatments.

3. LED masks

As well as regulating oil production and effectively treating acne, LED masks can also help reverse the signs of aging. So, whether you’re struggling with acne scars or age spots, an LED mask is well worth the investment.

LED masks are pretty pricey, but you would pay much more for laser therapy treatments in a skincare clinic, and you can use your mask in the comfort of your own home every day! I was kindly gifted a FaceLite LED mask a couple of months ago and I have to say, my skin has never looked better. I’m going to do a full review of this device on my blog very soon, so stay tuned for that!

4. Aloe vera

Scars and scabs, be warned! Aloe vera is a magical (and pretty inexpensive) ingredient that works like magic on blemishes - and best of all, it gets to work super quick, so you won’t have to wait an age to notice a difference. After just a few days, you should begin to notice a significant reduction in the appearance of any scars.

My advice would be to make sure that you get an aloe vera gel that’s as close to the ‘real thing’ as possible. Aim to get a natural formulation that’s at least 99% pure aloe. Or, better yet, get an aloe plant and enjoy the benefits of those juicy leaves straight from the plant!

5. Fruit enzymes

Naturally occurring fruit enzymes effectively break down dead skin, eradicating those top layers of cells on our scar tissue. There are lots of great skincare products that contain fruit enzymes, but if you fancy a bit of DIY work, you can actually apply fruit straight to the skin. Whizzed up fruit pulp is both inexpensive and fabulous - just be careful which fruits you’re applying to your face. Highly acidic fruits like lemons and limes can do more harm than good.

So there you have it - everything you need to reduce hyperpigmentation, scars and discoloration, all in one blog post!

I really hope you all enjoyed this post and I can’t wait to share more with you all very soon.

Lots of love,

Grace x
