THE 5 MOST COMMON BEAUTY MISTAKES WE'VE ALL MADE.

As a blogger and someone that understands we all view beauty in a different way, I completely advocate people using products in their own way to achieve the look that they love and ultimately, want to create. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and let’s face it, the world would be a very boring place to be if we all liked the same things and looked the same way...

...however, there are such things as beauty blunders and while we do all like to do things our own way, it’s good to know how to avoid certain makeup mishaps (and skincare ones, too!) and make our look as flawless as possible. So, in this blog post, I’m going to share some of the most common beauty blunders with you all, together with expert advice on how to fix these problems and create a look that you’re proud of.

So, without any further ado, let’s get to it!

1. Wearing The Wrong Shade Of Foundation

A classic faux pas that we’ve all fallen victim to at one point or another, wearing the wrong shade of foundation is something you kind of have to experience in life just to realise how much better life if when you find the right shade.

Now, usually, this type of makeup mishap happens when we are younger. Going into boots and swatching countless foundations with our friends was always fun, right? And yet despite trying on gazillions of different shades, somehow, we would always settle on something entirely wrong.

Ah the classic orange tide marks - you definitely helped make for some timelessly classic, if not completely embarrassing time hop shots - but I think I speak for everybody when I say that this error is one we’d all like to leave firmly in the past.

With that said, shopping for foundation really isn’t easy and unless you really are an expert in the field, making the wrong decision is, well, a likely outcome. So, to avoid this from happening, be sure to consult one of the professionals at the makeup counter you are visiting. They will shade March you and be able to tell you what type of undertones your skin has (pinks or yellows).

Also, as a top tip, I would advise NOT buying online unless you already know the exact shade that you need.

2. Over-Applying Under Eye Concealer

Kim Kardashian has taught us many things when it comes to beauty, with one of the most recent revelations being the art of ‘baking.’

Nope, I’m not talking about whipping up a batch of cupcakes - I’m actually referring to a makeup technique that both Kim and her famous MUA Mario swear by. In short, baking is all about illuminating the under eyes first by using concealer and then by topping off with a powder. Sounds easy, right? Well, technically, it is, but in spite of its apparent simplicity, baking is something that really is tricky to get the hang of...

...I think it’s because the temptation is to overdo it. Applying tons of product always seems like a great idea at the time, but in actual fact, layers and layers of heavy concealer rarely creates a killer look. In fact, it usually completely kills our look full stop.

So, if your baking or even just concealing, be mindful of how much product you’re using - and if you can, resist the temptation to cake your products on. Honestly, as long as you’re using high quality products, there’s really no need to plaster it on!

If you're on the lookout for a new concealer, I strongly recommend trying the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer - it's a makeup artist favourite and it's amazing! I also love the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, KIKO Full Coverage Concealer and Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer. 3. Going Too Heavy On The Highlighter

Now this little faux pas in particular is one that I can definitely relate to. What can I say? I just love highlight, which is why I sometimes find it extremely difficult to apply a sensible amount rather than TONS of it.

Fortunately, after experiencing one too many ‘silver noses’ as I like to call it, I am now much more frugal with my application and I tend not to go too heavy with it - but it has taken me a long time to get to this point!

The thing is, highlighter is extremely addictive. It gives us that glowy, dreamy complexion we all long for, but if you got too far, like me, you will end up with a silver (or gold) nose, along with various other metallic-looking facial features. Highlighting is great, but just try not to overdo it.

For those wondering which highlighter I use, it's the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle. I also love the NARS Liquid Illuminator in Hot Sand.

4. Squeezing And Picking Our Skin

Whether you suffer badly with acne or you simply have the very occasional hormonal breakout, one thing that we've all done before - and then hugely regretted afterwards - is squeezing and picking at our skin.

Blemishes and spots are a friend to nobody, let's be honest here, but if you can refrain from popping and poking, you'll soon realise that your skin recovers much faster when you don't mess with it.

I've never suffered terribly with spots, but when I have experienced small breakouts, I've always found it incredibly difficult to keep my hands away from my face - it's just too tempting to start messing! But honestly, if you can stop yourself, you'll be doing yourself a huge favour in the long run. After all, while a spot isn't exactly the prettiest thing, it is only a temporary thing. A scar on the other hand, could be permanent.

As a top tip, if you have been hacking away at your skin and you're now sat there despairing at what you've done, try applying some Savlon to the wound/blemish. Savlon is amazing and it's so affordable - you can buy it here from Boots.

5. Scrubbing Our Skin Too Often

Exfoliating the skin is a process that prizes countless benefits. Not only does exfoliating our skin help slough away all those old, dead skin cells and grime, it also gives our pores a really deep clean and leaves our skin looking super fresh, clear and refined.

However, as with many other beauty treatments and regimes, exfoliating is one of those things that's very easy to overdo and while it feels great to have that super-smooth, baby-like skin, by scrubbing too much, we are actually doing more harm than good.

I tend to exfoliate my face between 2 and 3 times a week depending on how my skin feels and what I've been doing/what I'm planning to do. For example, if I'm going away for the weekend, I'll probably squeeze in just one more exfoliation session to really refine my pores and ensure that the texture of my skin is as smooth as possible.

If you're exfoliating more than 3 times per week, then it's likely that you're doing it a little too often. You may find that by doing this, you are breaking out more and you may even have patches of pink skin where you have damaged the surface of your complexion. My advice? Take a break from the scrub for a few days and feed your skin by smoothing on some hydrating facial moisturiser or oil. Personally, I love the Clarins Lotus Oil and the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate - both are amazing.

I really hope you all enjoyed this post & I can't wait to share more beauty, fashion and lifestyle posts with you all very soon.

Lots of love,
Grace x
