I’m really sorry to be that annoying person that’s saying the same thing as everybody else, but there really are so many girls and women that continue to re-apply their makeup, day in and day out, without even giving their makeup brushes as much as a quick rinse in the sink. And not only does this really impact the finish of your makeup, it’s also really unhygienic, too.
I remember being about 17 and never washing my makeup brushes. My mum was always on my case reminding me to give them a scrub, but I never listened. Instead, I’d whip out my flat foundation brush - absolutely loaded with old foundation - and slick it over my face every morning. At the time, I was just really careless and I suppose at that age, I just wanted to do things my own way. And so defying my mum’s advice seemed to make sense to me.
Now, though, I look back and cringe. I honestly can’t even think of all those germs and the amount of grime I must have been slathering over my skin. Fortunately, I never seemed to breakout or suffer as a result of my ways, but still, it’s pretty grim. And for many women, I’m certain that this habit is a huge contributing factor in their breakouts.
The question on everybody’s lips is, of course, ‘how to clean makeup brushes?’ And this is something that I understand completely. With so many beauty experts pushing different products and techniques upon us, it can be really difficult to decipher not only what does and doesn’t work, but what we should actually try first.
But don’t worry - I’m here to assist. And you’ll be pleased to hear that my makeup brushes cleansing method won’t cost you a pretty penny.
There are lots of products out there that claim to clean your brushes better than anything else. But whilst I’ve absolutely no doubt that some of these products are brilliant, there are definitely more cost-effective ways to freshen up your brushes. And for me, nothing works quite as well as a squirt of hand wash.
Yep, you read that right - hand wash.
It might sound a little crazy when you first read that, but think about it - hand wash destroys an average of 99.9% of bacteria and it’s used to clean the one body part that is exposed to perhaps the most grime ever. So actually, it makes perfect sense.
I clean my makeup brushes (Real Techniques makeup brushes & Look Good Feel Better are my favourites!) roughly three times per week and in order to get that ‘good as new’ feeling, I pump one squirt of hand wash onto each brush, lather the soap in with my fingertips to create a foam, and then rinse under lukewarm water.
It’s such a simple method of cleaning & the results are honestly fantastic. I’m always amazed by just how much bronzer, blusher & foundation is washed away down the sink after just a couple of days. And I’m always even more amazed at how much better my makeup looks when I’ve used a freshly-cleaned brush to apply...it’s crazy!
I really hope you all found this blog post useful & I look forward to sharing more beauty, style & lifestyle content with you all very soon.
Lots of love,
Grace
