There are many things in life that you can buy - makeup, clothes, pretty handbags. But as the old saying goes, you can’t buy class.
Being classy & sophisticated is all about how you carry yourself. It’s every aspect of your being and in particular, all those finer details.
As I’ve gotten a little older, I’ve almost lost interested in what’s on-trend and 'in fashion', and I’ve began to fill my wardrobe with more timeless pieces, instead - pieces that will always look good, rather than those that lose their relevance after one or two seasons.
But not only that, I’ve started to understand that what captivates me about certain people is their demeanour and their overall presence. Being classy and sophisticated isn’t defined solely by how we dress - but everything else, too. There’s an art to it. From how we speak to what we wear and how we handle certain situations, sophistication is a multi-faceted quality that’s completely invaluable. So, for this blog post, I thought I would share a write up of all my top tips on how to be more sophisticated.
I really hope you enjoy!
How To Be Classy & Sophisticated
1. Opt for classy timeless wardrobe staples
It’s so true - a crisp white shirt, some classic blue skinny jeans and a pair of court shoes is just one of those outfits that will always look good. Why? Because of its simplicity. It’s a timeless classic. Effortless and uncomplicated.
All too often, we are influenced by the latest trends and ‘what’s hot’, but the classics never ever go out of style. So, instead of buying into every single seasonal teend and burning a big hole in your pocket, focus your attention on building a more concise, capsule wardrobe instead.
2. Be well mannered, always
Being sophisticated isn’t all about how you look, though - it's much about how you behave, too. Which is why it’s super important to always remember your manners. A simple ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ always goes such a long way - our mums were right.
3. Educate yourself & stay up to date with current affairs
Okay, so the news is a teeny bit depressing at the moment and so many of us (myself included, I have to confess) have switched off completely. In general, though, it’s always a good idea to stay in tune with what’s going on in the world.
If you can’t bear to watch another episode of the news right now, then I totally get it - but when things return to normal, try to keep up to date.
4. Don’t overdo your makeup
When I look back at old pictures of myself, I can’t decide whether to laugh out loud or hang my head in shame. My makeup was so bad! But wasn’t all of our makeup terrible when we were teenagers? Thick eyeliner, caked-on foundation, orange tide marks... I could go on but I’ll spare you the visuals.
Fortunately, 10 years of experience in learning to do makeup and breaking up with bad cosmetic habits has led me to a much better place when it comes to my face. And now I understand just how much of a difference our makeup actually makes in how sophisticated we look.
You can never go wrong with a soft pink lip (I recommend MAC Angel lipstick), a light swish of bronzer (NARS Laguna Bronzer is a personal favourite) and some jet black mascara (you just can't beat Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara.)
4. Always have your nails done
But the self care doesn’t stop with our faces. Oh no. If you want to really nail that chic and sophisticated look, then you’ll have to consult your talons, too. So, if your nails are looking a little more shabby than chic right now, then it’s time to schedule in a manicure.
Salons are really going through it at the moment with reopening and closing, but there’s no reason why you can’t give it a go yourself at home. There are lots of great home gel kits available on the market, oe if you want to make or super easy for yourself, simply invest in a few new nail polishes. I love Candy Coat - they have so many colours to choose from, they are affordable and the quality is fantastic.
5. Take good care of your clothes
There are so many things you can do to prolong the life of your clothes and to make them look better on - and it all starts with how well you take care of them. Simple things such as following the temperature guides on the washing labels, carefully steaming your garments and being gentle when hanging them up all make an enormous difference. You could spend hundreds of pounds on a beautiful blouse, but if it’s creased and the shoulders are wonky because it’s been hung up poorly, it will never ooze that chic, elegant quality.
6. Be organised & always plan ahead
I think one of the biggest things when it comes to being sophisticated is how you manage your life and how you organise yourself. For this reason, I always try to plan ahead and I like to keep the space around me super tidy and organised.
Cluttered surroundings really do result in a cluttered mind, and a cluttered mind causes stress, anxiety - a whole ton of things that impact not just how sophisticated and ‘girl boss’ we look, but how happy we are, too.
If you do just one thing this year, make it your goal to truly take charge of your life. Plan your outfits. Stow all of your important documents in a folder. Keep a diary and write in it every single day. These are all really small, simple changes that will allow you to thrive and truly become transform into that chic, sophisticated woman that you’ve always dreamt of.
7. Accessorize with delicate jewellery
From classic pearl earrings to dainty gold chains and delightfully delicate bracelets, when it comes to channelling your inner sophisticated senorita, a picking of pretty jewellery is an absolute must.
Chunky jewellery can actually look super sophisticated, too, so this is by no means me telling you to completely alter your style. However, it must be said that a handful of delicate pieces really does make the world of difference.
A couple of my favourite brands for jewellery include Monica Vinader and Pandora.
8. Pop on a pair of sunglasses
I feel as though sunglasses are just one of those things that instantaneously elevate any outfit. And whilst designer sunglasses are always a real treat, the great news is that there are now lots of more affordable alternatives available.
My favourite brand for accessories has to be Katie Loxton - I’m just so in love with this brand! And Marc bought me a pair of Katie Loxton sunglasses for Christmas. The sunglasses are so sturdy & robust, the case is super luxe and in general, I find that these sunglasses genuinely look and feel much more expensive than they actually are. Which is always amazing!
I could continue on with this list forever, as there really are so many things you can do to really enhance the level of classiness and sophistication that you exude - but for now, I think this is a good start. I will add to this blog post as and when I think of more great tips on how to be sophisticated.
But for now, I really hope that you enjoyed this post & I look forward to sharing more with you very soon.
Lots of love,
Grace x
