HOW TO DO MAKEUP WHEN IT'S HOT - 9 TOP TIPS FOR MAKING MAKEUP STAY ON DURING SUMMER.

When my phone alerted me to the fact that it’s currently hotter in the UK than it is in Barbados, I had to pinch myself for a moment. I mean, okay, we don’t have the Barbados ocean or the Barbados beaches, but to have the heat certainly makes for a change from all the rain we’ve been getting recently.

I love the warm weather - it’s just wonderful to be able to get outside and enjoy the sun. But the heat does have its drawbacks, too. And as someone who loves their makeup, knowing how to do makeup when it’s hot is a complete minefield.

During the day, I actually prefer to not wear makeup, to be honest - especially when it’s this hot! But if I’m going out for food & drinks, or heading to an event (shout out to anyone that’s getting married this summer!) needless to say, I like to give my face a good old painting.

Whether you’re heading to the races, a wedding or you’re simply going for a few drinks with the girls, knowing what makeup to wear when it’s hot is a must.

So, for this blog post, I thought I’d step in and help.

Sharing everything you need to know about how to make makeup stay on when it’s hot, this blog post is your one-stop-shop for everything you need to know about summer makeup. So, if you’ve been wondering what is the best makeup to wear in summer, then great news! - you’ve arrived at your perfect destination.

Right, let’s get to it…

What Makeup Is Good For Hot Weather?

I’m going to split this post into a series of top tips on how to keep makeup on in hot weather, and I’ll include some of the best makeup products to use in summer. I hope you enjoy!

1. Make sunscreen your ultimate priority

Rocking a gorgeous summer makeup look always feels great, especially when you’ve nailed that ‘golden goddess’ vibe. But before you even begin to think about summer makeup must-haves, sunscreen is your first point of call.

We should all be wearing sunscreen and skincare products with SPF every single day, irrespective of how sunny (or not sunny) it is - but when it’s baking hot outside, skipping the sun cream is an even bigger skincare sin than usual.

People often avoid SPF skincare products in the fear that they will be oily or feel super heavy on the skin. Fortunately, though, there are now lots of high quality SPF face creams available to choose from - many of which are completely non-comedogenic (this means that they won’t block your pores or cause breakouts.)

A couple of my favourite SPF moisturisers include the CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion with SPF 25 and the La Roche Posay Anthelios Sun Intolerance SPF 50+ Moisturiser. In this heat, I would lean towards the La Roche Posay, simply because it promises a higher level of UVA/B protection.

2. Stick to a lighter makeup look

If you’re anything like me, as much as you love wearing makeup, you’re also equally excited to whip out your cleanser in the evening and take it all off again. It just feels good to have fresh skin again, doesn’t it?

And that’s why it’s important to try and stick to a light makeup look when it’s hot outside.

One of the worst things - for me personally - is that feeling of my skin being completely suffocated by my makeup, and when it’s warm, that sensation is amplified.

To avoid the urge to run to the bathroom and wipe everything off, skip the heavy makeup products and opt for those with a more sheer coverage, instead. Tinted moisturisers, BB creams and CC creams all act as great alternatives to foundation during the summer months, and there are loads available to pick from.

My all-time favourite tinted moisturiser is the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, but the Revolution Superdewy Tinted Moisturiser makes for a fabulous affordable option.

3. Think About Your Skincare Products

Any great makeup look requires the help of a solid skincare routine, so don’t underestimate the importance of prepping your skin properly when it’s hot.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to find that my skin is much oilier than usual when it’s hot, which is why I rejig my skincare routine a little during the summer months.

Mattifying toners and oil controlling skincare products pose the perfect solution for oily skin sufferers, as they help reduce the amount of oil that the skin produces throughout the day.

The La Roche Posay Effaclar range is great, and the products are surprisingly affordable.

4. Consider going matte

We tend to associate summer makeup looks and hot weather makeup looks with dewy skin - but actually, opting for a matte finish is often a much better idea.

The problem with dewy makeup is that the products we use are designed to moisturise the skin. Now, normally, this isn’t a bad thing - but when it’s hot and our makeup is already sliding off our faces, it’s not so great.

So, as tempting as it may be to reach for your best-loved dewy makeup products, my advice would be to stay well clear. Matte makeup products don’t have to be super heavy - just use less product and do your research in advance. There are plenty of light coverage matte makeup products out there to choose from, and of course, a lightweight setting powder is worth its weight in gold at this time of year.

5. Eye primer is essential

If you’re heading to a swanky do and you’re planning on whipping out your Urban Decay Naked Heat palette, then be sure to have an eye primer at the ready.

Generally speaking, eye primer isn’t always completely necessary, as concealer and foundation are pretty good at holding everything in place. But when it’s hot, having a product that’s made especially for fixing eyeshadow in place is a must.

Want to know what is the best eye primer? A couple of my personal favourites include the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Anti-aging Primer Potion and the Hourglass Veil Eye Primer - both of which last for ages.

6. Waterproof mascara is the way to go

Waterproof mascara is invaluable when it’s hot - it really is fabulous.

There are loads of great mascaras out there, but during a heatwave, even the best mascara in the world will run eventually.

To avoid mascara running and to prevent those annoying little mascara specks around the eyes, invest in a good quality waterproof mascara and get ready to embrace the heat in style.

Some of the best waterproof mascaras I have tried include the Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Waterproof Mascara and the Christian Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Waterproof Mascara. I actually wore the Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Waterproof Mascara on a spa weekend not so long ago, and this mascara stayed perfect the whole time. There was no fretting about looking like a panda when emerging from the steam room, and for me, that’s the sign of a very good mascara. It’s a ten out of ten from me.

7. Use lip liner all over the lips

This isn’t something I do often, but when it’s super hot and I want to make makeup stay on when it’s hot, I find that applying lip liner all over the lips really does work wonders.

This is one of the best hot weather makeup hacks, ever, as it really does increase the staying power of lipstick.

For a classic nudey pink lip that looks great both morning and night, no matter the event, my go-to lip colour is MAC Whirl Lip Pencil with MAC Patisserie Lipstick. It’s such a great look!

8. Don’t forget blotting paper

When it’s hot, blotting paper is officially new BFF - and it’s so cheap to buy.

Blotting papers are great for removing excess residue from lipstick before applying another coat. This simple layering process is one of the best ways to help makeup stay on when it’s hot. So, if you’ve been wondering how to make lipstick stay on during summer, then this is one summer makeup tip that you can’t skip.

9. Have your eyebrows tinted

I love a bit of eyebrow pencil, but when it’s hot, I like to keep my summer makeup routine minimal, and if I can skip a couple of makeup products and still look fab, then I absolutely will.

Eyebrows are one thing that - providing you have a decent shape and thickness already - you can leave well alone when it’s hot. All you need is a little eyebrow tint and you’re good to go.

I’ve been tinting my eyebrows myself for ages now. I learned to do them when the salons were closed during the pandemic, and now I do them once every two weeks to keep them looking fresh.

The best at-home eyebrow tint I have used is the Mylee Eyebrow and Eyelash Tint (and it's just £5.50 from Feelunique!). It’s so easy to use and brows look perfect in less than 5 minutes. No makeup necessary.

What’s not to love?

And that's just about everything!

I really hope you all enjoyed this blog post and I can't wait to share more with you all very soon.

Lots of love,

Grace x
