HOW TO PROTECT BABY FROM THE SUN: TOP TIPS ON BABY SUN PROTECTION.

Slathering the SPF 50 on has become completely second-nature to me. I take my sun protection very seriously - and even more so when it comes to Eric.

Looking outside right now, you’d actually hardly even believe that it’s summer (FYI the weather in Manchester is shocking at the moment - we are definitely living up to our ‘the rainiest city in the world’ reputation!) But even still, knowing how to protect baby from the sun is so important.

Baby skin is beautiful - so much so, in fact, that I genuinely spend half of my time just gazing and admiring Eric’s perfect little porcelain complexion. It’s just divine! But gorgeous though it may be, make no mistake, that super smooth, flawless skin is extremely sensitive.

Baby skin is new skin, and so it’s very reactive to everything - hence why baby skin rashes are so common. But as well as being highly reactive to allergens and various environmental factors, baby skin is also highly susceptible to sun damage and sun burn.

So, how do you protect baby from UV rays? And how do you stop baby getting sun burn?

I’m here to help.

For this blog post, I thought I’d step in and share my top tips on how to protect baby from the sun.

This is an article that every mum needs to read, so I really hope that you all find this useful!

Top Tips On Preventing Baby Sun Burn

1. Invest in a hat for your baby

One of the very best things you can do when protecting baby from the sun is to buy him a sun hat.

As well as keeping the sun out of your baby’s eyes, a good sun hat will also help shield their head & back of neck from those harmful UV rays.

The head, neck and ears are among the most sensitive areas of the body when it comes to sun damage, and so it’s super important that they are suitably covered.

One brand that has really impressed me when it comes to the best baby accessories is Banz. A European brand that specialises in sunglasses for babies and accessories for babies, Banz also creates baby bucket hats, too (take a look at their Feel No Flare Sun Hats here) which are ideal sunnier spells when your little one needs ample UV protection.

As adorable as they are functional, the Banz Feel No Flare Hats for babies & toddlers provide plenty of coverage from the sun, an adjustable toggle that can be tightened or slackened to fit baby’s head and are available in a variety of prints and patterns to suit your little one's personal style!

Eric has already had so much wear out of his Banz baby hat, and he gets so many compliments on it whilst we are out and about!

2. SPF 50 is a must

I feel like we’ve all learned so much about sun protection over the past few years - but the thing that stands out to me the most is the importance of wearing a high protection lotion.

When I was younger, I used to consider anything above SPF 20 to be super protective. I don’t think I even knew SPF 50 was a thing, to be honest!

Nowadays, I know much better, and of course, I would never use anything than SPF 50 on Eric’s delicate baby skin.

I tend to use a couple of different sun lotion formulas on Eric to help ensure that I’ve achieved maximum coverage and that he’s fully protected. Clear oil sprays are perfect for seamlessly covering baby’s hair & scalp, meanwhile thicker sun creams are perfect for massaging into those fleshier areas and keeping the face shielded.

3. Full-length lightweight outfits are great

As well as keeping baby protected from those harmful UV rays, it’s also equally important to help keep baby as cool and comfortable as possible.

And a great way to tackle both the sun rays and the heat is to dress your baby in lightweight clothes that provide plenty of coverage.

Full-length linen rompers and lightweight cotton dungarees are ideal for baby boys, meanwhile long summer dresses and jumpsuits are perfect for baby girls

4. Keep baby in the shade

One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect baby from the sun is to keep your little one in the shade as much as possible.

When you’re out on walks or you’re heading for a summer picnic in the park, opt for a spot that’s under a tree, rather than in full sun. Or, failing that, always take an umbrella with you wherever you go. Umbrellas might be made for the rain, but they double up as mini parasols, too!

5. Don’t stay outside for too long

As lovely as the sunshine is, it’s important to know when to call it a day and go back inside - which isn’t always easy, particularly when sunny spells are few and far between! - but it really is a good idea to avoid peak sun and spend time indoors, too. There are many ways to prevent sun damage, but ultimately, if you really want to keep your baby fully protected, it’s best bring them back indoors when it gets too hot.

I really hope that you all enjoyed this blog post & that you picked up some useful tips on how to protect baby from the sun.

Until next time, lovelies!

Lots of love,

Grace x
